How overtime and hours work
The private security agreement defines working time by annual engagement category (A, B and C), from full-time down to hourly engagements, with a conservative reference week of 42 hours. Significant overruns of the contractual rate are settled at 100 percent of gross pay; in categories B and C, a significant overrun reaching a higher category means all hours are paid at that higher rate. Switzerland's Labour Act caps the week at 50 hours, also as a 12-week average. Employees are entitled to at least 11 hours of daily rest and 35 hours of weekly rest.
Frequently asked
How is working time structured in private security?+
Working time is set by three annual engagement categories (A, B and C), from full-time down to hourly engagements. A conservative weekly reference of 42 hours applies, with the Labour Act's 50-hour ceiling as the absolute maximum, also applied as a 12-week average.
How are overruns of the contracted hours paid?+
Significant overruns of the contractual rate are caught up at 100 percent of gross salary. In categories B or C, if a significant overrun reaches a higher category's threshold, all hours are paid at that higher category's rate. Repeat overruns lead to permanent transfer to the higher category.
What are the daily and weekly limits?+
A working day may reach up to 13 hours within a 13-hour span. The week is capped at 50 hours, also applied as a 12-week average. Employees must receive at least 11 consecutive hours of daily rest and at least 35 hours of weekly rest.
