In practice

Public holidays in Switzerland, explained

Switzerland has one of the most fragmented public holiday systems in Europe, and understanding it is essential for any employer running payroll across cantons. The Federal Constitution designates only a single nationwide holiday, 1 August (Swiss National Day). Every other day off is a matter of cantonal law: under the Labour Act (ArG Article 20a), each canton may declare up to eight additional days that are legally treated the same as Sundays. This means the working calendar in Zurich, Geneva, and Ticino can differ substantially from one another.

In practice a handful of days are observed almost everywhere, including New Year's Day, Ascension, Christmas, and Saint Stephen's Day, but even these are grounded in cantonal statute rather than federal law. Religious history drives much of the variation: traditionally Catholic cantons observe days such as Corpus Christi, All Saints', and the Immaculate Conception, while Protestant cantons often do not. Some holidays, like Berchtoldstag on 2 January, are common in the German-speaking east but absent in Geneva and Ticino.

When a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, Swiss employers are generally under no obligation to grant a substitute day. The holiday is simply lost, so the real number of days off changes from year to year and from canton to canton. There is likewise no automatic statutory premium for working on most holidays, since compensation rules are largely left to employment contracts and collective bargaining agreements.

For payroll and leave administration, the practical takeaway is that a single national holiday list does not exist. Employers with staff in more than one canton must maintain separate holiday calendars per location, confirm which of the eight cantonal days each canton has adopted, and check any applicable collective agreement for enhanced pay. Getting the cantonal mapping right is the difference between accurate leave balances and repeated payroll corrections.
